# Abbot's Room

In older temples, monks lived together in shared sleeping quarters rather than having rooms of their own. The abbot, who had many temple affairs to handle, had a separate room for work and private meetings. The name *fangzhang* refers to a space one zhang square, roughly ten square metres.
