# Abbot's Quarters

In traditional monasteries, monks lived communally and generally slept in shared dormitories rather than in private rooms. The head of a monastery, however, had many administrative duties and therefore had a separate room known as the Abbot's Quarters. The Chinese term *fangzhang* originally referred to a space measuring one *zhang* square—approximately 10 square meters—which served as an office and a place for private meetings.
